OUR MUDROOM REINSPIRED
The mudroom/entryway is an extension of our home that we added on about four years ago now. After major renovations, I was done and didn’t feel like putting more time or effort into the space. Over the last year I have been curating each room to be more inviting and “us”. Last but not least, lies this little space at the end of the hallway. A room that was sure to be forgotten about but I wanted to make it our hidden gem.
I like to start off my design process by choosing the type of feeling I would like to have when entering a room. For the mudroom, I wanted all the cozy vibes. Where I live, we have more cold days than warm and I wanted to walk in feeling like i’ve been hugged. When creating a room, I always start with the walls and floors - Is it worth leaving as is? Or will I accomplish this feeling more so if I change what is there? Plain drywall painted in decorator while didn’t make me do my happy dance. I decided a half wall treatment done in tongue and groove then painted in a dark earthy green would do just the trick. I chose to go with Desert Twilight from Benjamin Moore and kept the top portion of the wall in Decorator While by Beauti-Tone.
Below is a picture of the mudroom before we tackled this space for the second time:
The floors are hard to miss, aren’t they? In a perfect/no budget world, I 100% would’ve chose something more neutral. Don’t get me wrong, I love the bold pattern but it just didn’t match up to what I envisioned for this space. Also, when I first laid the floors I made a post on my personal instagram saying, “Dear future Kayla, please don’t regret this”. Future Kayla regrets but also doesn’t? Something in me still gets happy when I see them but something in me would be happier to see them go haha. Yeah, confusing, I know. ANYWAYS, the tiles had to stay and I had to figure out how to go dark on the walls but not make the floors pop.
The floors are still there, they are noticeable but they no longer demand all the attention because I placed a whole lot of texture and natural elements around them. The jute rug, woven baskets, textured pillows, wooden bench and old butcher block built in bench all helped to distract the eye from only seeing floors.
Lastly, I needed the space to be one that would stay organized and house all of our outerwear. We do live a simplistic lifestyle and don’t have an abundance of items that need storage. However, when it comes to our jackets and shoes we have a problem..
Five years ago if you wanted to to talk storage with me, I would have glazed over. In fact, one of my most favourite humans on this planet is extremely passionate about storage and I never got it BUT, then I became a mom. Now we go to each others homes for tea and show each other all our newly organized bins and storage areas, HAHA. I love it.
Now that we have a feeling, we are wrapped in a hug AND we have storage…this entry is “complete”.
“Complete” means that I will go back and change out hardware, decor, light fixtures and wall hangings throughout the years. I like change and look forward to being inspired by this space and growing with it.
