JIMMY’S ROOM
A toddler’s room that will grow with him for years to come.
It is bittersweet isn’t it? Moving your toddler from crib to big boy bed…But a whole new room? Crazy… which is why he clung to his crib for a bit. However, 9 months later he decided his big boy bed works better because Mum and Dad can cuddle him to sleep. PS, I was climbing into the crib with him but it was getting worn in and started to break. The first night he slept in his room I balled my eyes out and sadly shut the door to his nursery room. The first morning he decided to get out of bed and go sit on the couch with a bag of chips I also balled my eyes out.
I knew that eventually, we would need to turn our spare bedroom into James’ room because our home is small and only has three bedrooms. I was itching for another project and because I knew this had to be done, I just wanted to get on it!
The first thing I knew I wanted was two beds and there are a few reasons for that. I wanted a bed that would grow with him and be timeless but also knew that if we had three kids eventually, two of them would be sharing this space. (The other two kids haven’t happened yet). Instead of having to revisit this idea I tried to get ahead of myself by buying two of the same bed so they always match. This was just a thinking ahead type of thing and maybe it is just James who occupies this space. In the case that it is just James, I still liked having two beds for sleepovers and the option to push both beds together for company if need be. PS we have a guest house that we will use when we have family stay over.
The second thing I knew I wanted was for the space to be timeless. By timeless, I mean no definite “theme”. I chose to keep all the textiles neutral including the walls. We painted the space Decorator White by Beauti-Tone in Velvet (My ultimate go-to for white) and brought in some colour with the built ins.
Built ins were a must for this space. We don’t have any closets and who doesn’t love a spacious organized spot to put alllllll the kid stuff. I contemplated getting dressers or wardrobes but the nook in the wall couldn’t have been more perfect for a built in closet. The built in was probably one of our most tedious projects yet and we learnt a ton! Also, it’s massive…(If you want to see how we built it you can check out my highlights on my instagram). Once built, I painted the entire unit Knoxville Grey by Benjamin Moore in Pearl.
The main components of the space were done and the next step was to add in those pieces that cozy it up! Bedding, throw pillows, rugs, window treatments,…the whole works. If you would like the links to items in his room, visit my highlight on instagram…(HAHA worst blogger ever). “Hey welcome to my blog, I type 1000 words a minute because I have no time and there’s no links either, your welcome!”
